Maknae in everyday Korean

Long before K-pop, 막내 simply meant the last-born child in a family. Parents introduce their youngest as 우리 막내 (uri mangnae), "our youngest," often with obvious affection.

Because age matters so much in Korean relationships, almost every group has a 막내: a team at work, a friend group, a sports club, or a film crew.

  • 저는 삼 남매 중에 막내예요.

    Jeoneun sam nammae junge mangnaeyeyo.

I'm the youngest of three siblings.

  • 우리 팀 막내가 일을 제일 잘해요.

Uri tim mangnaega ireul jeil jalhaeyo.

The youngest on our team is the best at the job.

Maknae in K-pop

In idol groups, the maknae is the youngest member by birth date. Fans often see the maknae as the one the older members tease, protect and spoil, and variety shows love to play with that dynamic.

Being the maknae also comes with a role. The youngest is often expected to be cheerful, a little cheeky, and quick to help, which is why so many fan nicknames are built around the word.

Fan terms built on maknae

International fandoms have created a whole vocabulary around the youngest member.

  • Golden maknae (황금막내, hwanggeum mangnae): a youngest member who seems good at everything
  • Evil maknae: a mischievous youngest who teases the older members, mostly an English fandom term
  • Maknae line: the youngest few members of a group, as opposed to the "hyung line" or "unnie line"
  • Maknae on top: a joke for when the youngest bosses the older members around

Maknae at work

In a Korean office, the 막내 is usually the newest and youngest employee. Traditionally the maknae handled small tasks like booking restaurants for team dinners or setting up meeting rooms. Workplace culture is changing, but the word is still used everywhere.

  • 막내야, 회의실 예약했어?

    Mangnaeya, hoeuisil yeyakaesseo?

Hey kiddo, did you book the meeting room?

How to pronounce maknae

It is written 막내, but Koreans pronounce it "mang-nae." The ㄱ at the end of 막 turns into an ng sound before ㄴ. That is why the official romanization is "mangnae," while fans usually spell it "maknae." The second syllable sounds like "neh."

  • 막둥이

    makdungi

an extra-affectionate word for the youngest child
