Gwenchana (괜찮아, officially romanized gwaenchana) means "it's okay" or "I'm fine." Said as a question, 괜찮아?, it means "Are you okay?" Koreans also use it to politely turn something down, the way English speakers say "I'm good, thanks."

Literally
it is all right, it is not bad
In natural English
it's okay, I'm fine, are you okay?

The basic meaning of gwenchana

괜찮아 comes from the adjective 괜찮다, which means "to be all right" or "not bad." It is one of the first words most learners pick up from K-dramas, usually in a scene where one character falls, cries or gets bad news and another rushes over.

The same word does several jobs depending on tone and context. Here are the three you will hear most.

1. "Are you okay?" and "I'm okay"

With a rising tone, 괜찮아? asks if someone is all right. The answer can be the very same word with a falling tone: 괜찮아, "I'm fine." To comfort someone, Koreans often say 다 괜찮을 거야, "everything will be okay."

  • 괜찮아? 안 다쳤어?

    Gwaenchana? An dachyeosseo?

Are you okay? You didn't get hurt?

  • 다 괜찮을 거야.

    Da gwaenchaneul geoya.

    Everything will be okay.

2. "No thanks, I'm good"

When someone offers more food, a ride or help, 괜찮아요 is the polite way to decline. It literally says "it's fine," which in context means "no need." Learners are sometimes confused when a 괜찮아요 turns out to mean no, so listen for whether something was being offered.

  • 커피 더 드릴까요? 아니요, 괜찮아요.

    Keopi deo deurilkkayo? Aniyo, gwaenchanayo.

Can I get you more coffee? No, I'm good.

  • 괜찮아요, 신경 쓰지 마세요.

    Gwaenchanayo, singyeong sseuji maseyo.

It's fine, don't worry about it.

3. "Not bad, pretty good"

괜찮다 can also judge quality. A 괜찮은 사람 (gwaenchaneun saram) is a decent, good person, and asking 이 옷 괜찮아? means "Does this outfit look okay?" In this sense it is mild praise, closer to "pretty good" than "amazing."

  • 이 옷 괜찮아?

    I ot gwaenchana?

    Does this outfit look okay?

  • 그 식당 꽤 괜찮았어.

    Geu sikdang kkwae gwaenchanasseo.

    That restaurant was pretty good.

Casual, polite and formal forms

  • 괜찮아 (gwaenchana): casual, for friends, younger people and family
  • 괜찮아요 (gwaenchanayo): polite, safe with strangers, shop staff and coworkers
  • 괜찮습니다 (gwaenchanseumnida): formal, for customers, presentations or the military
  • 괜찮으세요? (gwaenchaneuseyo?): an extra-respectful "Are you all right?" for elders

Why is it spelled gwenchana?

In Hangul it is written 괜찮아, but the ㅎ in 찮 is silent, so it sounds like "gwen-cha-na." The official romanization is gwaenchana. Fans write it many ways: gwenchana, gwaenchana, kwenchana or even gwenchanha. They all mean the same word.
