Saju (사주) is the traditional Korean way of reading personality and fortune from the moment you were born. Your birth year, month, day and hour each become a "pillar" of two characters, eight in total, which is why it is also called 사주팔자 (saju palja), "four pillars, eight characters." Many Koreans check it for fun, for New Year fortunes or before a big decision.
Word at a glance
사주saju
- Literally
- four pillars
- In natural English
- a reading of your birth chart
The four pillars
사 means four and 주 means pillar. Each pillar, for your birth year, month, day and hour, is written with a heavenly stem (천간, cheongan) and an earthly branch (지지, jiji). Together they make eight characters, 팔자 (palja).
The word 팔자 is so familiar that it appears in everyday speech: 팔자가 좋다 means someone has a lucky, easy life.
걔는 팔자가 좋아.
Gyaeneun paljaga joa.
That person was born lucky.
The five elements
Every character in a saju chart belongs to one of the five elements, 오행 (ohaeng): wood, fire, earth, metal and water. A reader looks at which elements are strong, which are missing, and how they feed or check each other.
The most important character is the 일간 (ilgan), the day master: the stem of your day pillar. It stands for you, and much of a reading starts from its element, for example "a tall tree" for yang wood.
How Koreans use saju
- New Year fortunes: many people check their 신년운세 (sinnyeon unse), the fortune for the coming year.
- Compatibility: 궁합 (gunghap) compares two people's charts, a classic before marriage.
- Naming: some parents ask a naming office to choose a baby name that balances the child's elements.
- Saju cafés and apps: reading your chart with friends is a popular, light-hearted outing.
Is saju the same as Western astrology?
Both start from your birth date, but saju uses the East Asian calendar cycle of stems and branches rather than planets and zodiac signs, and the hour of birth matters a lot. Your Korean zodiac animal, such as the rabbit or the dragon, comes from just one character, the branch of your year pillar.
