눈치nunchi

Nunchi (눈치) is the ability to read the room: to sense what people around you think or feel without them saying it, and to act accordingly. Someone with quick nunchi notices a friend is upset before they speak; someone with no nunchi keeps joking when everyone else has gone quiet.

Word at a glance

눈치nunchi

Literally
eye-measure
In natural English
reading the room, social awareness

The basic meaning of nunchi

눈 (nun) means "eye," and a popular explanation is that 눈치 is a kind of measuring with the eyes: watching faces, pauses and mood. Koreans treat it as a real social skill, almost like emotional intelligence in action.

In a culture where many things are said indirectly, nunchi helps people pick up on a "no" that is never spoken, notice when it is time to leave, or see who should be served first at the table.

Phrases you will hear with nunchi

  • 눈치가 빠르다 (nunchiga ppareuda): to have quick nunchi, to catch on fast
  • 눈치가 없다 (nunchiga eopda): to have no nunchi, to be oblivious
  • 눈치를 보다 (nunchireul boda): to watch others' reactions, often nervously
  • 눈치채다 (nunchichaeda): to notice or figure something out
  • 눈치껏 (nunchikkeot): using your judgment, "read the situation"
  • 눈치가 빠르네.

    Nunchiga ppareune.

    You catch on fast.

  • 걔는 눈치가 없어.

    Gyaeneun nunchiga eopseo.

He just can't read the room.

  • 눈치챘어?

    Nunchichaesseo?

    Did you notice?

Good nunchi and bad nunchi

Having nunchi is a compliment. It means you are considerate and socially smart. But 눈치를 보다, watching others too closely, can describe someone who feels pressured, like a new employee who doesn't dare leave the office before the boss.

That is why Koreans sometimes say 눈치 보지 마, "Don't worry about what others think," to someone who is being too careful.

  • 눈치 보지 말고 편하게 먹어.

    Nunchi boji malgo pyeonhage meogeo.

Don't feel awkward, just eat comfortably.

Nunchi in K-dramas and variety shows

K-dramas love a character with no nunchi: the friend who sits down between a couple on a date, or the coworker who announces a secret at the worst moment. Variety shows play the opposite game, rewarding members who sense what the producers want before being told.

The nunchi game

눈치 게임 (nunchi geim) is a popular party game. Players stand up and call out numbers in order, starting from one, without any set turn. If two people call the same number at once, they lose, and the last person left to call also loses. Winning depends entirely on reading everyone else's timing.
