The 6 basic vowels

Korean vowels are simple lines. A long line is the base, and a short stroke shows which way the sound goes.

A vowel is never written alone. It always sits next to a consonant, so when there is no sound before it, Koreans add ㅇ, a silent circle. That is why ㅏ is written 아.
