사랑해saranghae

The most common way to say "I love you" in Korean is saranghae (사랑해), the casual form you use with a partner, close friends, or family. Add -yo to get saranghaeyo (사랑해요), which is softer and polite, and use saranghamnida (사랑합니다) for formal or public moments, like a singer thanking fans on stage.

Word at a glance

사랑해saranghae

Literally
(I) love (you)
In natural English
I love you

What saranghae literally means

사랑해 comes from the verb 사랑하다 (saranghada), "to love." 사랑 (sarang) is the noun "love," and 하다 (hada) means "to do." So 사랑해 is literally "love-do," a complete sentence on its own.

Notice that there is no "I" and no "you." Korean usually drops words that are clear from context, so 사랑해 already means "I love you" when you say it to someone. Adding 나는 (naneun, "I") and 너를 (neoreul, "you") is grammatically fine but sounds stiff and a little textbook-like.

Saranghae vs saranghaeyo vs saranghamnida

The meaning never changes. What changes is the speech level, which shows how close or formal you are with the listener.

  • 사랑해 (saranghae): casual. For a partner, close friends, siblings, and younger family members
  • 사랑해요 (saranghaeyo): polite but warm. Common with parents, in-laws, and when a celebrity talks to fans
  • 사랑합니다 (saranghamnida): formal. Used in speeches, on stage, in ads, and in public messages to a big audience
  • 자기야, 사랑해.

    Jagiya, saranghae.

    Honey, I love you.

  • 엄마, 사랑해요.

    Eomma, saranghaeyo.

    Mom, I love you.

  • 여러분, 사랑합니다!

    Yeoreobun, saranghamnida!

    Everyone, we love you!

Do Koreans actually say saranghae a lot?

Between couples, yes. Many Korean couples say or text 사랑해 often, especially at the end of a phone call. You will also see it written in short forms in casual texts.

With family, it depends on the family and the generation. Many people, especially older generations, show love more through actions, like asking "밥 먹었어?" (bap meogeosseo, "Did you eat?"), than through words. Saying 사랑해요 to parents has become more common, but some people still find it a little embarrassing to say face to face.

Among friends, 사랑해 is often playful. A friend might say it after you buy them coffee, the same way an English speaker might say "love you!"

Saranghae vs joahae: love vs like

좋아해 (joahae) means "I like you." In a romance, 좋아해 is usually the confession at the start, and 사랑해 is the bigger, more serious step. That is why so many K-drama confessions begin with 좋아해 and save 사랑해 for later episodes.

Saying 사랑해 too early can feel heavy, just as "I love you" can in English.

How to pronounce saranghae

Say it in three syllables: "sa-rang-hae," roughly "sah-rahng-heh." The ㄹ is a light tap, somewhere between an English "r" and "l," and 해 rhymes with "heh." In fast, relaxed speech the ㅎ gets very soft, so it can sound close to "sa-rang-ae."

Questions people ask

Is saranghae only romantic?+

No. Koreans say it to partners, family, and close friends. With friends it is often lighthearted, like "love you!" in English.

Can I say saranghaeyo to my Korean teacher or boss?+

It is polite in form, but saying it to a teacher or boss would feel too personal in most situations. A warm 감사합니다 (gamsahamnida, "thank you") is safer.

Why do K-pop idols say saranghaeyo or saranghamnida to fans?+

Because they are talking to a large audience, many of whom they do not know personally. The polite and formal forms show respect while still being affectionate.

What does nado saranghae mean?+

나도 사랑해 (nado saranghae) means "I love you too." 나도 means "me too."
